ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES@#This study aimed to identify preschool children’s eating behaviors associated with early childhood obesity and its multi-level, socio-ecological determinants. @*SUBJECTS/METHODS@#In a cross-sectional study of 364 mothers of preschool children aged 3–5 years, these children’s healthy eating behaviors were assessed using a validated preschool nutrition quotient (NQ-P) questionnaire. The children’s overweight or obesity statuses were determined based on body mass index percentiles from the 2017 Korean National Growth Chart. The associations between the NQ-P score and risk of overweight or obesity were examined using multivariable logistic regression. The associations of individual, maternal, physical, and media environmental factors with the NQ-P score were also examined using multivariable linear regression. @*RESULTS@#Preschool children with greater NQ-P scores were at a significantly lower risk of overweight or obesity (P < 0.01). The NQ-P score had a significantly positive association with maternal body mass index and an inverse association with household income (all P < 0.05). Maternal parenting and feeding practices exhibited associations with the NQ-P score.Positive associations were observed with “warm,” “structured,” and “autonomy-supportive” parenting as well as monitoring feeding practices (all P < 0.05). In addition, the NQ-P score had a significantly positive association with the childcare center’s anti-obesogenic environment, such as the provision of nutritional and physical-activity support and vicinity of the built food environment to the home, including access to good-quality food, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat foods (all P < 0.05). Regarding media environments, the NQ-P score demonstrated more significant associations with viewing and eating and/or cooking content displayed on online video platforms (all P < 0.05) than with that on television. @*CONCLUSIONS@#Our findings confirm the significance of healthy eating behaviors in earlychildhood-obesity prevention and underscore the importance of multilevel maternal, physical, and media environmental interventions that effectively guide eating behaviors in preschool children.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate nutritional support status and effects of nutrition consultation in critically ill surgical patients. METHODS: The medical records of 76 patients, admitted between June 1 and November 30, 2013, were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were divided into 2 groups: the nutrition consultation group (n=17) and the no consultation group (n=59). Patients were also divided into 3 groups: the enteral nutrition (EN) group (n=8), the parenteral nutrition (PN) group (n=25), and the enteral and parenteral mixed nutrition (ENPN) group. Total delivered/required caloric ratio and serum albumin, serum total protein, hemoglobin and other biochemical variables were compared in each group. RESULTS: Mean daily required and delivered caloric/protein amount were EN group 60.0%, PN group 64.6%, and ENPN group 86.9%. ENPN group showed statistically significant difference when compared with EN group, PN group (P=0.005). When the proportion of patients who were fed more than 75% of the daily required calories was calculated, EN, PN, and ENPN showed 37.5%, 25.0% and 81.8%, respectively. ENPN group were significantly more supplied (P=0.007). Although neither the nutrition consultation group nor the non-consultation group received more than 80% of the daily required calories, the nutrition consultation group received 73% of the daily required calories whereas the no consultation group only received 46% (P=0.007). The total delivered/required protein ratio was approximately 69% of the nutrition consultation group and approximately 42% of the no consultation group (P=0.006). CONCLUSION: The results of providing nutritional consultation to intensive care unit patients showed an increase in the nutrition support. Nutrition education, continuous monitoring and management for nutritional support by systemic administration of a nutritional support team should be considered in order to achieve effective clinical outcomes in critically ill surgical patients.

ABSTRACT

On the contrary to congenital anomalies of intestinal rotation in pediatric patients, those in adults are generally nonsymptomatic and of little consequence. Occasionally, however, an adult may have midgut nonrotation and complain of chronic or recurrent abdominal pain. Intestinal nonrotation can be divided into complete or partial failure of rotation and into abnormalities affecting the proximal segment, the distal segment or both. We report herein a 43-year old female patient with symptomatic partial, cecocolic nonrotation.

ABSTRACT

Despite major diagnostic advances, 10-30% of hepatic metastases of colorectal carcinoma remain undetected. In this study, CEA levels of peripheral (p-CEA), drainage venous blood(d-CEA) and gallbladder bile(b-CEA) in patients with colorectal cancer were determined to examine the significance of their CEA levels in predicting hepatic metastases. From January 1993 through May 1996, p-CEA, d-CEA and b-CEA were obtained in 50 colorectal carcinoma patients without gallbladder pathology. Synchronous hepatic metastases were found in 5 patients(Hm group) and 45 cases had no hepatic metastasis. Among the 27 cases who followed up over 2 years, metachronous hepatic metastases(Hr group) were found in 6 cases and remaining 21 cases had no metastases(Ho group). Elevation of p-CEA, d-CEA, and b-CEA was significantly correlated with lymph node metastases and hepatic metastasis. The b-CEA levels were significantly correlated with p-CEA(r=0.533926, p 40 ng/ml had hepatic metastases(5 synchronous, 6 metachronous). However it is impossible to establish the possible of b-CEA because of high false positive and negative rate in predicting metachronous hepatic metastases. In conclusion, it is suggested that d-CEA could be highly sensitive indicator for selecting high-risk patients of metachronous hepatic metastases of colorectal cancer.
